Maran Wilson has created an invaluable HTML Quick Reference, which contains descriptions of many, many HTML tags.

Useful Tools

For those who are interested in really using HTML, we recommend buying Allaire's HomeSite HTML editor. This program provides a great deal of support (such as completing tags as you type) while still allowing you to retain control over your code. HomeSite is far superior to Notepad when it comes to coding large bits of text. As an added bonus, when buying HomeSite, you get a free copy of JASC's Paint Shop Pro, which is a good graphics creation program.

To upload your files, WS_FTP (LE or Pro) can't be beat!

Download the HTML Color Picker. This freeware program lets you pick colors from a palette, then get the corresponding HTML code for that color.

Rogier Meurs has written NotePad+, a free replacement for the Windows NotePad applet. This program makes it a breeze to make quick changes to your HTML files. As an added bonus, you can also open text files that exceed 32K in size without having to divert to WordPad.

DesktopPublishing.com has a wealth of free graphics and backgrounds.

If you frequently upload files to a web site, be sure to check out WebDrive from RiverFront Software. This software assigns a drive letter to your web site, so you can open HTML and other files directly, without the bother of up/downloading.

JavaScript Tips

Dr. Joe Burns HTML Goodies site contains dozens of tutorials on HTML and JavaScript, as well as free graphics that you can download.

As you start getting comfortable with JavaScript, make sure to visit the JavaScript Made Easy! page.
